According to a study appearing in the August issue of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, eating the same foods, day in and day out, may actually help you to lose weight by lowering your interest in meals, meaning you eat less.

The 32 women in the study participated in half-hour long sessions in which they were given a computer task, and were rewarded with a serving of macaroni and cheese each time they completed their task. All of the women completed five of such sessions over the study’s course, but half of the women participated in one session every day for five consecutive days, while the other half participated once a week for five weeks.

In contrast to the decrease in daily calories eaten by the women who ate the mac and cheese every day, the women whose sessions were spaced one week apart were eating about 30 more calories each day by the study’s end.

This finding shows that eating the same food daily makes us habituated to it, whereas eating it weekly does not, the researchers said.

According to a new study in the Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity, counseling to improve body image results in increased weight loss among women.

In the study, overweight and obese women enrolled in a weight loss program based on diet and exercise. All of the women received general health information about good nutrition, stress management, and the importance of looking after oneself.

Half of the women also attended 30 weekly group sessions during which issues such as exercise and emotional eating were discussed. The meetings addressed ways to improve body image, as well as how to recognize and overcome personal barriers to weight loss.

—

Those that underwent counseling lost an average of 7 percent of their starting weight, while the control group lost less than 2 percent, on average, over the year-long study.

Stick with fat-free or 1% milk, and eliminate soda and sugary drinks such as sweetened iced tea, sports drinks and alcoholic beverages.Replace juice with whole fruit. You’ll get more nutrition and fewer calories, ounce for ounce, in the fruit. Plus, the fruit has fiber, which you’ll need if you’re eating less.

Of particular interest for the research, funded by the US Department of Agriculture, was parental choice of restaurants as a connection to childhood obesity, McIntosh said.

Whole grain cereals are complex carbohydrates rich in fibers which aid in flushing out fats and toxins out of the body. They keep the insulin levels in the digestive system at a low, thus inhibiting the fat storing action of the body. Contrary to popular belief that carbohydrates are the main culprits for weight gain, whole grain cereals are good carbohydrates which speed up metabolism.

This seems a little bit like one of those “well duh” studies, but according to the CDC, if you’re overweight and have arthritis, you apparently don’t have a desire to exercise a whole lot.

As reported on WebMD:

Obese adults with arthritis are 44% more likely to be physically inactive than obese people who do not suffer from the painful disease that causes inflammation and stiffness of the joints, the CDC says in a new report.

According to the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report for May 20, arthritis is common in adults who are obese. And arthritis-related joint pain may reduce or discourage physical activity among obese adults, the report says.

The report says arthritis affects 35.6% of obese adults in the U.S. and that it may be a “potential barrier” that prevents the exercise that could lead to weight loss and help make people feel better.

Like I said, not too shocking. Some of the other findings of the research were more enlightening, however, such as the fact that women were more likely to have both arthritis and obesity (or arthritis only).

CafeFit announced today the launch of five new healthy coffee blends, including one that aids in weight loss.

The Dieting Blend from CaféFit is certainly the most popular of the five blends. It contains vitamins and natural supplements that suppress appetite and boost metabolism. The major appetite suppressant in this fortified coffee is Garcinia Cambogia, which is a citrus fruit extract that is widely used as a successful appetite suppressant. The coffee itself is harvested, ground and roasted with taste in mind. This adds to the slimming qualities of the coffee, since good tasting coffee doesn’t necessarily require fattening sugar and cream. Coffee itself also has proven weight loss qualities, according to the CaféFit website,

“…its caffeine triggers a natural process in the body called thermogenesis which burns fat by increasing the body’s temperature (the same process that occurs during a workout). When this process is enhanced with natural weight loss supplements like appetite suppressants and fat burners, the result is effective weight loss”.

Other blends can help with energy, the immune system, focus, and provide “the medicinal power of mushrooms while giving the coffee a smooth mushroom taste”. Mmm… You can get more information — and order the various blends — here.

And spent mostly on dieters going it alone:

Marketdata Enterprises, Inc., a leading independent market research publisher of “off-the-shelf” studies about service industries since 1979, has released its biennial 412-page study: The U.S. Weight Loss & Diet Control Market (11th edition). This is a complete analysis and forecast of ALL major segments of the U.S. diet market.

“America’s estimated 75 million dieters—about 80% of whom try to lose weight by themselves, are fickle and shift from fad to fad. These shifts in dieter preferences spell boom or bust for diet companies. American dieters in 2009-2010 were faced with a lousy economy, rising gas prices, and limited discretionary dollars for weight loss programs. Consequently, they are spending their weight loss dollars very carefully.”, according to Research Director, John LaRosa.
