Vegetarianism: The Cure for Global Warming?
OK, I think we’re all in agreement if I state that
a vegetarian diet is one of the best things you can do for
your personal health. Even the American Dietetic Association
endorses it, stating that "appropriately planned vegetarian
diets are healthful, are nutritionally adequate, and provide
health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain
diseases." But can vegetarianism also defeat global warming?
That’s the contention
of British physicist Alan Calvert. Writing recently
in the journal Physics World, Calvert claims
that the animals we eat are responsible for 21% of the
world’s carbon dioxide emissions. Calvert claims
that there would be no adverse health effects associated
with stripping meat from our diets, and if global vegetarianism
proved unworkable, it could be abandoned at any time.
All in all, it certainly seems like an “easier”
fix to the problem of global warming than some of the
oil-addicted marginalized alternatives. "Worldwide
reduction of meat production in the pursuit of the targets
set in the Kyoto treaty seems to carry fewer political
unknowns than cutting our consumption of fossil fuels,"
Calvert says.
Expect something in the neighborhood of cataclysmic
lobbying efforts from McDonalds, Burger King and Wendy’s
if this idea starts to gain traction.
