Mediterranean Diet Key: Olive Oil

Apr 20th, 2010 | By admin | Category: Diet & Nutrition, Weight Loss

A new study suggests that the heart-healthy benefits of eating the so-called Mediterranean diet may have a lot to do with one element of it: olive oil.

The Mediterranean diet focuses on a high consumption of fruits, vegetables, breads and cereals, nuts and seeds, beans and potatoes, with little red meat and moderate amounts of dairy, poultry and fish consumed. Olive oil is a big part of the diet, and seems to help in repressing genes that promote inflammation.

“These findings strengthen the relationship between inflammation, obesity and diet and provide evidence at the most basic level of healthy effects derived from virgin olive oil consumption in humans,” study leader Francisco Perez-Jimenez of the University of Cordoba, Spain, said in a news release from BioMed Central, publisher of BMC Genomics. The study was published online April 19 in the journal.
