Without a doubt, a mat is going to be your most important purchase
when you first start practicing yoga. Since yoga is practiced
on the hard floor, you're going to need some form of cushioning
between you and it. A mat will also help to define your yoga
"space." When shopping for mats, there are several
things to keep in mind. A mat should be thick enough to be comfortable
for however long your sessions last. It should stay put, i.e.
it shouldn't skid or slip on you. It should be durable and easy
to store, and if you're going to be lugging it around, make
sure it is small and light enough to do so. You should also
keep in mind that specific types of yoga use different types
of mats. When in doubt, ask your instructor for advice. To
